Dear Friends,
Since our founding in 1923, Catholic Rural Life has been about the work of celebrating rural life, affirming family farmers, revitalizing faith in rural communities and applying the teachings of Jesus Christ to the challenges facing all who live in rural America.
One of the challenges facing rural communities situated near our nation\’s borders is the surge of families and unaccompanied minors trying to cross into the U.S. illegally. The recent photos of young children being separated from their parents by U.S. Board Patrol officers have been heartbreaking to see.
We recognize the challenges facing those men and women who enforce U.S. laws at our borders. For many years, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has been urging Congress to reform U.S. immigration laws due to its impacts on families. We join in solidarity with families who are suffering and with the Catholic bishops now calling for reforms in our immigration laws and the policies for enforcing those laws.
What can we do? Here are a couple options:
- Pray for the families and individuals who are suffering. Also, pray for wisdom for our political leaders.
- Express to your U.S. legislators your concern about much needed reform in U.S. immigration laws, including a more family-friendly approach.
Blessings,
James Ennis
