Psychological rehabilitation of military personnel, their families and IDPs in national nature parks

The Ecological Commission of the Mukachevo Greek Catholic Eparchy (MGCE) recently held an important meeting with the National Guard of Ukraine to advance rehabilitation projects for war-traumatized defenders of Ukraine within the Transcarpathian National Parks. This meeting marks an important step in the ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive rehabilitation program for Ukrainian defenders who are returning from the front lines, many of whom are in urgent need of psychological, physical, and spiritual care after enduring the harsh realities of war.

A key focus of the discussion was how to harness the recreational and natural resources of Transcarpathia to ensure holistic rehabilitation for military personnel and provide ongoing support for their families.

The meeting was also attended by Roman Loziuk, a military chaplain of the National Guard, who has collaborated with the Commission for many years by offering environmental services in parishes. He shared his intent to expand his role beyond military units, reaching parishes frequented by soldiers and their families. Chaplain Roman Loziuk stressed the importance of spiritual support, not only during active service but also during recovery periods in the rear.

Another significant participant was American biology professor Matthew Temple of the Carmelite Order, who visits Transcarpathia annually to strengthen cooperation with the Commission and the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies. His expertise in psychological rehabilitation, rooted in Western practices, is invaluable to Ukraine. Professor Temple expressed interest in a project that combines the region’s natural recreational resources with psychological support for military personnel, particularly in areas where nature can play a crucial role in their healing process.

Rehabilitating military personnel is a complex effort that demands an integrated approach. By combining environmental and spiritual resources, this initiative aims to effectively support Ukraine’s defenders and their families.

Meeting storks at the Berehovo Public Center “Everyone Can Help”

At the Berehovo Public Center “Everyone Can Help,” eco-activists hosted an educational session for children focused on stork conservation. With the storks soon beginning their mass migration to Africa for the winter, the session aimed to raise awareness about the challenges these birds face during their long journey. Additionally, the session highlighted the plight of storks that, due to injury or other reasons, will be unable to join the migration and will stay behind in Ukraine throughout the winter.
