Responsibility for the Creation of the Ecological Commission of the MGCE

This week, at the residence of the bishops of the Mukachevo Greek Catholic Eparchy, a working meeting took place between the Ecological Commission of the MGCE, American biology professor Matthew Temple of the Carmelite Order, and His Grace, Bishop Theodore Matsapula, the ruling Bishop of the MGCE. The meeting focused on updating this year’s program of the Commission, aimed at deepening Christian environmental awareness and fostering Christian environmental issues among the believers through educational initiatives in parishes. They also talked about important strategies to enhance the Church’s environmental initiatives in the upcoming year.

The discussion emphasized the MGCE’s active involvement in practical environmental preservation, highlighting it as an important reflection of the Christian duty to care for God’s Creation. The meeting group addressed pressing environmental challenges in the Eastern Carpathians, such as climate change, waste management, pollution, and the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources. The issues were presented as both environmental and ethical concerns, highlighting the Church’s important role in promoting responsible stewardship of the environment.

The conversation highlighted the importance of involving children and youth in environmental education initiatives within parishes. Young believers are encouraged not only to foster their spiritual awareness but also to actively protect the natural world that God has entrusted to us. Through participation in environmental campaigns, educational programs, and conservation efforts, young people can significantly contribute to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility within society. The participants underscored that educating younger generations on ecological responsibility is a crucial mission for the Church, which must lead by example in promoting ethical care for Creation.

The meeting marked a significant step forward in shaping the strategic direction of the MGCE’s Ecological Commission, reaffirming the protection of the environment as a core element of Christian service.

At the Berehovo Public Center “Everyone Can Help,” eco-activists hosted an educational session for children focused on stork conservation. With the storks soon beginning their mass migration to Africa for the winter, the session aimed to raise awareness about the challenges these birds face during their long journey. Additionally, the session highlighted the plight of storks that, due to injury or other reasons, will be unable to join the migration and will stay behind in Ukraine throughout the winter.
