MGCE’s Ecological Commission provides training to “TheoBand” lyceum students to reduce textile waste

At the initiative of the Ecological Commission of the MGCE, the Uzhhorod Greek Catholic Private Lyceum “TheoBand” recently hosted an eco-educational event titled “Ukraine Without Textile Waste.” This event aimed to raise awareness about the environmental impact of textile waste and promote sustainable practices among students.

Together with lyceum teacher Simona Bondarieva and commission member Mykhailo Bilanych, third-grade students explored the detrimental effects of textile waste on the environment. They learned various methods of recycling textiles and discussed alternatives to throwing away old, unwanted clothes. The lecture was enriched with an interactive presentation and an introduction to “Trash Hunter,” the first online eco-game in Ukraine that teaches players how to sort garbage effectively.

Following the theoretical session, the event transitioned into a creative workshop. They used their creativity and imagination to repurpose old T-shirts and eco-bags, drawing and coloring them to give these items a new life. This practical activity not only reinforced their understanding but also showcased the potential for upcycling textile waste.

In the final part of the event, Ms. Bondarieva encouraged the students to share their thoughts on the importance of caring for their clothes to prolong their lifespan. The children engaged in a lively discussion, exchanging ideas on reducing textile waste, reusing old clothes, and sharing garments with those in need, as exemplified by the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The primary goal of this event was to enhance children’s understanding of environmental issues, equip them with actionable steps to protect nature, and instill a sense of environmental responsibility. The Ecological Commission of MGCE  is dedicated to arranging comparable future events to nurture environmental awareness and responsibility in youths.
