Eco-educational classes about birds for the guests of the public center “Everyone can help”

Storks have become beloved residents at the “Everyone Can Help” volunteer center in Berehovo, consistently capturing the hearts of both children and adults who visit the center. Leonid Pokrytyuk, an ornithologist of IRCEF, tends to these majestic birds, offering visitors a unique opportunity to delve into the fascinating biology of storks. Mr. Pokrytyuk’s care extends to injured birds that cannot thrive in the wild, and under his watchful eye, they not only recover but also form a connection with the humans who visit. The experience of close interaction with these graceful birds leaves a lasting impression on visitors, instilling in them a profound love for and desire to care for avian companions. The volunteers at the center, understanding the impact of such encounters, recently organized excursions and eco-educational classes for new guests.

During these sessions, visitors were treated to a glimpse of Berehovo’s history by exploring the Count’s Court, an architectural gem dating back to 1629. The volunteers shared insights into the building’s rich history and its current role as a hub for teaching children about nature conservation. The surroundings of the Count’s Court have become a haven for owls, and the center’s storks and bantams leisurely roam the yard, adding to the enchanting atmosphere. After the avian adventures, guests participated in engaging sessions where they learned to identify birds by their appearance and distinctive calls. They delved into the fascinating world of owls, discovering their adaptations for successful nocturnal hunting, including silent flight, binocular vision, and the ability to turn their heads 270 degrees within the vault. The educational experience didn’t end there—guests were provided with informative booklets and posters about birds as thoughtful reminders.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
