Exploring the Biodiversity of the Pasiky Tract

During the autumn season, the late-blooming flower, known as the autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale L.), graces the picturesque “Pasiky” tract within the Uzhanskyi National Nature Park. It’s a sight to behold, and every year, students from environmental and naturalistic clubs affiliated with the Transcarpathian Regional Center for Children and Youth Creativity (“PADIUN”) eagerly venture to this protected area to marvel at this natural wonder.

The primary aim of this trip is not only to acquaint themselves with the biology of this remarkable plant but also to monitor the health of its population. According to the observations made by these young naturalists, this year has seen a mass blooming of the autumn crocus, and the neatly trimmed grass allows us to fully appreciate the delicate beauty of these flowers. Nearby information stands provide additional insights into the unique characteristics of the autumn crocus and, naturally, offer the opportunity to capture its beauty through photographs—a treasured souvenir indeed.

Olha Velychkanych, the tour organizer and an expert from the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies, underscores the importance of recognizing that the crocus is a listed species in the Red Book of Ukraine. Furthermore, while they are poisonous plants, they also hold medicinal and honey-producing properties. Regardless of their allure, these autumnal blossoms must not be plucked, for they are under protection! Under the guidance of their teachers, the young naturalists meticulously observed the flora and fauna of the tract, preserving the essence of nature in their photographs. During the tour, they also had the chance to encounter another natural marvel: the rapids along the Uzh River. These picturesque rocky formations obstruct the river’s course and are composed of sedimentary rocks from the Cretaceous and Paleogene eras.

Regrettably, the allure of this unique natural enclave draws tourists, who sometimes leave behind unsightly litter. As conscientious environmentalists, the children couldn’t overlook this issue and took it upon themselves to clean up the riverbank, participating in the International Day of Clean Banks. Outdoor environmental games added to the meaningful and enjoyable experience. The “Recognize a Tree by Touch” game was particularly enjoyed, allowing each participant to identify a tree by touch alone, deepening their connection with the natural world.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
