On May 21, in celebration of the International Day for Biodiversity, the Transcarpathian Regional Museum of Local Lore, named after T. Lehotskyi, held a captivating event for the third-grade students of Uzhhorod Primary School “Veselka.” The students went on an enlightening tour of Uzhhorod Castle, accompanied by their teachers, Nataliia Fatula-Kokayko and Halyna Zatorska.
The event unfolded in two engaging parts. Firstly, amidst the lush greenery of the castle park, students were spellbound by a narrative from Mykhailo Bilanych, the head of the Nature Branch, who illuminated the diverse array of trees adorning the grounds. The journey continued into the newly refurbished halls of “the Nature of Transcarpathia” exhibition, where students delved deeper into the rich biodiversity of the region. Mr. Bilanych intricately detailed the unique flora and fauna native to the Carpathians, emphasizing the imperative of preserving wildlife for generations to come.
The second part of the event was a lively interactive session intended to test the students’ knowledge of Transcarpathia’s biodiversity. A highlight of this part was the spirited collective quiz game “True/False,” expertly prepared and facilitated by Ruslana Dzhahman, a senior researcher at the Nature Branch. Furthermore, the children enthusiastically participated in the enthralling “Life on a Tree” game and various environmental board games thoughtfully provided by the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies and the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe. These activities were strategically placed throughout the exhibition following its renovation. It’s worth mentioning that the students found delight in the newly established photo zone near the third hall’s window, where they eagerly captured memories post-tour. The atmosphere at the event was welcoming and pleasant, leaving all attendees with a lasting positive impression. The children not only learned new things but also felt a mix of wonderful emotions that made them more interested in natural history and environmental conservation.
The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
