Integrated class: seventh-graders of Uzhhorod Lyceum visited the Zoological Museum and Botanical Garden of UzhNU

Mariana Sohanych and Hanna Popovych, teachers at the Uzhhorod Lyceum named after V. Grendzhi Donskoy, recently conducted an innovative integrated lesson combining Ukrainian and biology studies. This class was structured as an excursion to the Zoological Museum and the Botanical Garden of Uzhhorod National University, providing students with a hands-on learning experience that reinforced the theoretical material studied throughout the year.

This class was structured as an excursion to the Zoological Museum and the Botanical Garden of Uzhhorod National University, providing students with a hands-on learning experience that reinforced the theoretical material studied throughout the year.

The event began at the Zoological Museum, where the students had the chance to observe figures representing several hundred animal species worldwide. This opportunity allowed them to recall information from their biology lessons and recognize animals from the Transcarpathian region, eagerly sharing everything they knew about these creatures. In the Botanical Garden, IRCEF biodiversity expert and biologist Mykhailo Bilanych joined the excursion. He guided the students through the garden, helping them learn more about the flora of Transcarpathia. In the green classroom, the children listened to a lecture by their teachers about the unique plant species in the botanical garden and discovered the role exotic plants play in the city’s ecosystem. The highlight of their visit was seeing the legendary Edelweiss in bloom, an exciting and rare sight.

The teachers observed that this integrated approach significantly enhanced the students’ learning experience. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical exposure, the lesson not only deepened the students’ understanding but also sparked their interest in the natural world. This method of teaching fostered a sense of curiosity and observation among the children, leaving them with lasting impressions and a strong incentive to further explore both their native language and biology.

The event was held in the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
