The Synevyr Lyceum recently played host to an engaging workshop centered around the exploration of the local flora. IRCEF expert Liubov Hrechyn and teacher Maria Fetko took it upon themselves to educate the children about the pivotal role of plants in human life and the compelling reasons behind their protection.
Participants were given hands-on experience in learning wheat agriculture and the intricate steps of baking bread. They went on an informational quest, making postcards out of paper that looked like pieces of bread and scribbled answers to the search’s questions. This interactive adventure required students to answer riddles, solve puzzles, and complete numerous tasks in order to reach an appealing conclusion. The truth is that bread is an essential component without which life as we know it would be impossible. The educators focused on the relevance of this in the context of the challenging times that Ukraine undergoes during times of war, where growing wheat comes at a high cost, carried out by courageous people who work in the fields even in hazardous conditions.
As the event drew to a close, the children shared their family traditions associated with bread, offered up proverbs and sayings related to wheat, and savored delectable bakery products, further enhancing their appreciation for this essential component of their daily lives.
The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
