December 6 marks the commemoration of St. Nicholas Day, and traditionally it is a time to assist the less fortunate and reward children for their positive actions. In celebration of this occasion, representatives from the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum for Eastern Europe (IRCEF), the Institute for Ecological and Religious Studies (IERS), and the Ecological Commission of MGCE delivered gifts to students at Uzhhorod Gymnasium No. 13. This educational institution primarily educates Roma children, and the organizations’ experts routinely conduct eco-educational events every Thursday. Although the students were expecting a regular class this week, a delightful surprise awaited them — none other than St. Nicholas himself. Stepping into the role of St. Nicholas was Mykhailo Bilanych, an expert in biodiversity from IERS.

During the visit, St. Nicholas engaged with the children, asking them about their knowledge of St. Nicholas, what they had learned throughout the year, and whether they had exhibited honesty and obedience. The students eagerly shared their thoughts, recited poems, and sang songs related to winter holidays. In appreciation of their activity, good behavior, and attentiveness, the students were rewarded with sweet treats and stickers featuring images of owls and bats — subjects they had delved into during eco-education classes conducted by IERS experts. The children were thrilled to capture photos with St. Nicholas, expressed gratitude for the gifts, and made promises to uphold their good behavior into the upcoming year.
