Happy International Day for Nature Reserves and National Parks! Today is a significant day to celebrate our shared dedication to preserving and safeguarding our precious natural resources, laying the groundwork for a sustainable future for our planet. On this environmental holiday, we unite to pay tribute to the beauty and variety of nature, drawing motivation from its magnificence, and promoting responsible attitudes towards the environment.
Ukraine’s extensive network of nature reserves and national parks is evidence of the diligent efforts of conservationists over generations. They play a crucial role in addressing challenges related to conserving biological and landscape diversity, maintaining ecological balance, and fostering a conscientious worldview for people, communities, and society.
According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, our country boasts 8633 territories and objects within the nature reserve fund, covering 6.8% of the nation’s total area. This fund includes 5 biosphere reserves, 19 nature reserves, and 53 national nature parks. It is disheartening to note that 18 sites within the nature reserve fund are currently under temporary occupation by the russian army, and 13 are closed due to ongoing military operations.
Regrettably, about 30% of Ukraine’s protected areas have been impacted by war, resulting in significant direct damage estimated at trillions of hryvnias. This catastrophic situation extends beyond the territories themselves, affecting rare species of animals and plants that endure daily hardships due to the actions of occupiers. The war has led to widespread species extinction, the loss of natural habitats, and disruptions in the ecological balance.
On this day, we express heartfelt gratitude to all employees of nature reserves and national parks who persistently carry out their crucial conservation work amid the challenges of war. We are honored to collaborate with you! We extend our wishes for victory, inspiration, success, and boundless energy as you strive to achieve vital environmental goals.
