Workshop: Busting Bat Myths

Oksana Strichko, an educator at the Transcarpathian Regional Center for Children and Youth Creativity “PADIUN,” recently visited the students of “Image” Lyceum to dispel myths surrounding bats and shed light on the intriguing aspects of these creatures. Her mission was to dispel misconceptions and emphasize the vital role bats play in the functioning of ecosystems. During the session, Strichko highlighted the remarkable abilities of bats, including their unique skills in echolocation, smell, and hearing, which are crucial for hunting and navigating in their surroundings. She pointed out the diversity among different bat species, with some feeding on flower nectar while others prefer fresh blood. Despite these variations, all bats share a common trait: their nocturnal lifestyle.

The interactive meeting progressed to a multimedia presentation, providing the students with a visual journey into the diverse world of these wonderful and endearing animals. Following the presentation, children engaged in a creative activity, making bookmarks with bat images as physical reminders of the educational encounter. Oksana Strichko’s visit not only debunked myths but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the unique qualities of bats. By combining informative discussions with hands-on creativity, the session at “Image” Lyceum successfully engaged students in the fascinating world of these nocturnal creatures, encouraging a more positive outlook on their importance in our ecosystems.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
