“With nature in the heart!”

Today, more than ever, it is important to realize the inseparable connection between nature and humans. In turn, a conscious and careful attitude of each person to nature is possible only in the presence of ecological culture, and wide ecological knowledge, which should be formed starting from childhood.

Precisely with the aim of deepening the knowledge of students in natural sciences, and educating the younger generation in a careful attitude to the environment, on September 22, Olga Velychkanych and Oksana Kremin, teachers of the Transcarpathian Regional Ecological and Naturalistic Center for students Youth, experts of the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies, with the participation of biology teacher, Iryna Babych, held an educational environmental quest “With nature in the heart” organized with the help of the Ecological Commission of the Mukachevo Greek-Catholic Eparchy (MGCE)  for students of the 5th grade of the Uzhhorod Greek-Catholic private lyceum “Theobend”.

In the introductory part of the event, experts emphasized to the children the importance of studying and protecting the environment. Mrs. Oksana expressed her wish that, regardless of how the fate of the children will turn out in adult life, they will always remain nature lovers and, most importantly, active conservationists, study, research, and increase the natural wealth of our region to the best of their ability. Children had the opportunity to test their knowledge and contest the ability to work in a team by completing the quest.

Divided into teams, schoolchildren enthusiastically began to perform interesting tasks at bus stops, namely: “Sort the garbage”, “Guess the proverb”, “Flowers of the Ukrainian wreath”, ” Where is whose beak?”, which they successfully coped with. As a result, the team was awarded certificates and interesting gifts from the partners of the event. The championship was won by the “Mushrooms” team.

During the environmental event, children actively discussed how exactly they can participate in the protection and preservation of nature, in particular, strictly observing the main rule – “Do not harm nature”!  It means: do not litter the lawn where you rest; plant trees in the bank zone; observe the rules of hunting and fishing; do not disturb, do not frighten animals during the quiet season; while resting, do not turn on loud music; do not pollute the water body near which you live but study the world around you and share your knowledge with your peers.

The event was held by the teachers of the Transcarpathian Regional Ecological and Naturalist Center for Students Youth (TRENCSY) together with the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe as part of the project “Churches, religious and public organizations for the environmental of national minorities”, implemented by the Interreligious and Environmental Civil Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) (headed by  Alexander Bokotey) in cooperation with the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband NABU International) under with the support of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Auswärtiges Amt #CivilSocietyCooperation) project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
