Uzhhorod Secondary School No. 6’s Student-Led Conservation Effort

В Ужгородській загальноосвітній школі провели цикл екологічних уроків, на яких вчителька Ганна Попович навчала дітей допомагати птахам взимку.

Uzhhorod Secondary School No. 6, named after Vasyl Hrendzhi-Donskyi, had a student discussion on measures to help wintering birds after concluding a series of environmental classes led by the teacher Anna Popovych.

During the session, the teacher used informative posters received from the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies this summer. These posters featured Red Book bird species, serving as a valuable resource for the students. The visual aids ignited the students’ curiosity as they inquired about the unique attributes of each bird species, including their diets, habitats, and more.

The students decided to construct bird feeders to give birds the vital nutrition they need during the harsh winter months after conducting an in-depth study of Transcarpathia’s avian inhabitants. These new birdhouses were then placed in the school garden with care. The students eagerly watched the avian guests during their breaks, and once the first frosts showed up, they started bringing appropriate bird food, including unroasted seeds and grains.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
