Transcarpathia Gears Up for Mushroom Season: Active Preparation Underway

European Mushroom Day, also known as European Mushroom Action Day, is an annual autumn celebration initiated by the popular German science magazine “Der Tintling.” Its primary objective is to promote awareness about the significance of mushrooms in ecosystems and our daily lives. In a relevant thematic class led by teacher Orysia Krechko at Turya-Remetivskyi Secondary School, students delved into the understanding that mushrooms form an integral part of the ecosystem, coexisting alongside animals, plants, viruses, and bacteria. They were enlightened about the fact that molds and yeasts are also classified as fungi, playing crucial roles in the decomposition of organic matter and the enhancement of soil fertility. The teacher elucidated how many fungi engage in symbiotic relationships with plants, contribute to fermentation processes, and some even produce antibiotics that have historically revolutionized the field of medicine.

When discussing the edible mushrooms consumed by people, Orysia Krechko stressed the importance of collecting them in environmentally pristine areas. This caution stems from the fact that mushrooms can absorb heavy metals, organic toxins, and radioactive substances from the air, soil, and water. The teacher also raised awareness about the risks of venturing into the forest during times of war, particularly in regions bordering Russia and Belarus. She explained to the children that it’s vital to verify if the State Emergency Service of Ukraine has granted authorization before embarking on any wilderness excursions.

Thanks to the engaging materials provided by the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies (IERS), students quickly learned to distinguish between edible and poisonous mushrooms. Third-graders even showcased their favorite mushrooms through drawings, and some students crafted them from plasticine or Lego bricks. Above all, the most crucial lesson is the necessity of eating only those mushrooms that their parents are absolutely certain about. It is our hope that the knowledge gained during these lessons will prove valuable to both children and adults alike.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
