Experts and trainers of the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies (which is a component of the IRCEF) conduct a large number of eco-educational events with schoolchildren in Uzhhorod and Transcarpathia, most of which take place on the basis of the “out of the classroom” principle. It’s known that the traditional school education system is based on classroom learning. However, natural sciences, and especially eco-education, cannot form an ecological worldview in the younger generation, detached from the natural environment. Theoretical knowledge, no matter how efficiently it is transferred to students, will not be deeply assimilated without its practical consolidation in the environment. The trainers of the Institute repeatedly conducted various classes on birdwatching, using binoculars (kindly donated by the Hungarian Association of Ornithology and Nature Conservation (Dr. Sándor András Boldigh, Birdlife Hungary), studying insects in the natural environment – using special boxes with magnifying glasses donated by the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU) and other field equipment.

That’s why the experts of the IERS and the Ecological Commission of the Mukachevo Greek Catholic Eparchy (MGCE) in cooperation with the newly opened Lyceum “TheoBand” in Uzhhorod (operating under the eparchy) on October 21 had the opportunity to organize this event to the 5th-grade students (biology teacher – Iryna Yosypivna) a thematic lesson at the biological faculty of the Uzhhorod National University (UzhNU).

Thanks to faculty member Alina Huklyvska, lyceum students got acquainted with excellent modern microscopes with illumination, learned how to use microscopes in practice, considered permanent treatments of the structure of a conifer, and also learned how to make temporary treatments from onions and leaves of other plants. The students were also interested in other laboratory equipment: a centrifuge, a spectrophotometer, and analytical balances, because they were in such a university laboratory for the first time. We sincerely thank Yaroslava Hasynets, the dean of the Faculty of Biology, and Alina Huklyvska for the excellent lesson given to the “TheoBand” lyceums for the opportunity to work in the real laboratory.

The event was held within the framework of the project “Churches, religious and public organizations for the eco-education of national minorities”, which is implemented by the Interreligious and Environmental Civil Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) (head by Alexander Bokotey) in cooperation with the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband NABU International ) with the support of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Auswärtiges Amt #AA_Kultur #CivilSocietyCooperation ) project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
