An enlightening eco-educational session focusing on bat biodiversity conservation was recently organized at the parish in Velykyi Bereznyi for the Roma community. This special event for children of the Roma national minority was spearheaded by the teacher Olha-Polina Lendel, with the support of parish priest Mykhailo Lendel and in collaboration with the Ecological Commission of the Mukachevo Greek Catholic Eparchy.
During the lesson, the children delved into the fascinating world of bats, exploring their global and local species diversity, their vital role in nature, and various intriguing facts about their coexistence with humans. Ms. Polina’s informative presentation was complemented by captivating videos that offered a glimpse into the appearance and habitats of these remarkable creatures.
The participants were invited to create bat-themed art pieces featuring these nocturnal mammals against a forest backdrop to enhance the learning experience further. The children enthusiastically immersed themselves in this creative activity, actively discussing and reflecting on the knowledge they had acquired throughout the session. They departed with their unique artworks, serving as both a keepsake of the lesson and a reminder of the importance of conserving the bats.
The event was held with the participation of children of the Roma national minority in the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
