On November 2, the students from Uzhhorod Gymnasium #13 embarked on a virtual expedition to the forest, aiming to combat the issue of littering. Ruslana Dzhahman, a senior researcher in the Nature Branch of the Department of History and Local Lore and an expert from IRCEF, guided the children through an immersive journey into the forest environment, conducting an educational session titled “In the Autumn Forest”.
During the interactive presentation, the students were treated to breathtaking views of Hoverla, Synevyr, and other remarkable natural sites in Transcarpathia during the autumn. Simultaneously, they absorbed intriguing facts about the distinctive features of animal and plant life in the autumn period. The children were astounded to learn that rare autumn crocus and Crocus banaticus, both listed in Ukraine’s Red Book, bloom in our region this time. However, their amazement turned to surprise as they observed the forest littered with waste. Ruslana Dzhahman purposefully displayed photographs depicting the actual situation of waste in nature to emphasize the current climate emergency and its consequences for humans.
The students were taught how to reduce litter by participating in activities from the coloring book “Stepan’s Adventures in Kvadratlandia” (written by Ivanna Trofymenko) published by the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF). The gymnasium, in particular, comprises Roma children, and with the International Day of the Roma Language approaching on November 5, they were given coloring books translated into Romani. This allowed them, together with the main character Stepan, to contribute to the preservation of the ecosystem by dealing with garbage.
The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
