Promoting Responsible Animal Attitudes at Uzhhorod’s “TheoBand” Lyceum

Students at the Uzhhorod Greek Catholic Private Lyceum “TheoBand” recently had the opportunity to delve into the importance of humane and responsible attitudes towards animals during an enlightening educational session led by Oksana Kremin, the head of PADIUN and an expert from IRCEF. The primary objective of this event was to impart knowledge to the students about the significance of treating animals with kindness, nurturing their sense of responsibility, and instilling values of compassion and morality, particularly during these challenging times marked by conflict and warfare.

The session commenced with an introduction to the history of World Animal Day, an annual observance held on October 4th, aimed at raising public awareness concerning animal rights and the conditions in which animals are kept. Throughout the environmental event, participants delved into the critical issue of conserving animal biodiversity. They were engaged through a multimedia presentation and a video presentation featuring various aspects of domestic, companion, and wild animals. The group delved into a more detailed discussion on the fundamental principles that should guide our interactions with these creatures, as well as the rights they possess.

As the class unfolded, students enthusiastically shared stories about their own pets, their preferences, and intriguing anecdotes from their pets’ lives. To solidify their newfound knowledge, the children selected their favorite animal and expressed their creativity by painting representations of them. This environmental event played a pivotal role in honing the young learners’ skills and abilities to interact respectfully with animals, fostering a profound sense of personal responsibility for their own pets. In the words of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, “We are forever responsible for those we have tamed!” Indeed, this educational experience left a lasting impact on the students, ensuring that they carry the torch of compassion and responsibility toward animals into the future.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
