The children of the senior group “Sonechko” at Velykoroztitsky Primary School concluded their study of the “Birds” theme with a bird-watching session in the schoolyard. Natalia Stetso, a teacher at the school, an active volunteer at the Ecological Commission of the MGCE, and an expert of the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe led various classes throughout the semester, imparting knowledge about birds, their lifestyles, diets, and species to the children. The final activity brought the children together in the schoolyard to observe birds that winter in Transcarpathia.
Prepared in advance, the children brought treats for their feathered friends, including seeds, nuts, and cereals, which they used to attract birds to the feeders. During the walk, the kids had the opportunity to observe a great tit, a hawk, and pigeons. Recalling their previous lessons, the children shared where they had previously spotted these birds and discussed each bird’s preferred nutrition. Nataliia Stetso engaged her students in a discussion about what they had learned, emphasizing proper behavior to avoid frightening or harming the birds during their observation.
The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
