Meeting the Raven family at the Berehovo Public Center

Volunteers Diana Stremoukhova and Leonid Pokrytyuk of the Berehovo Public Center "Everyone Can Help" recently conducted an engaging and creative lesson about birds for young visitors. The session focused on introducing the children to the raven family, which includes seven nesting species: common raven (Corvus corax), western jackdaw (Corvus cornix), eagle owl (Corvus monedula), common magpie (Pica pica), Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius), and spotted nutcracker (Nucifraga caryocatactes). They also learned about two rare migratory species: carrion crow (Corvus corone) and Siberian jay (Perisoreus infaustus).

Volunteers Diana Stremoukhova and Leonid Pokrytyuk of the Berehovo Public Center “Everyone Can Help” recently conducted an engaging and creative lesson about birds for young visitors. The session focused on introducing the children to the raven family, which includes seven nesting species: common raven (Corvus corax), hooded crow (Corvus cornix), western jackdaw (Corvus monedula), common magpie (Pica pica), Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius), and spotted nutcracker (Nucifraga caryocatactes). They also learned about two rare migratory species: carrion crow (Corvus corone) and Siberian jay (Perisoreus infaustus).

Ornithologist Leonid Pokrytyuk shared fascinating insights into the intelligence of ravens, highlighting their ability to be easily tamed and their remarkable skill in imitating various sounds and human voices. He also provided valuable information on what to do if the children find small “lost” nestlings, emphasizing the importance of care and proper handling of these young birds. The lesson included watching educational cartoons about birds, which captivated the young audience and reinforced the information shared by the volunteers. Besides, the children participated in a hands-on activity where they made funny birds out of paper using the origami technique, allowing them to express their creativity while learning about avian life.

The event was held in the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).

Meeting storks at the Berehovo Public Center “Everyone Can Help”

At the Berehovo Public Center “Everyone Can Help,” eco-activists hosted an educational session for children focused on stork conservation. With the storks soon beginning their mass migration to Africa for the winter, the session aimed to raise awareness about the challenges these birds face during their long journey. Additionally, the session highlighted the plight of storks that, due to injury or other reasons, will be unable to join the migration and will stay behind in Ukraine throughout the winter.
