First-Graders Embrace Winter Preparations with a Heartwarming Gesture for Birds

Maria Kesler, a dedicated teacher at Yasinia Secondary School No. 1 and an expert with the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF), is on a mission to instill a sense of responsibility and compassion in her first-grade students. She educates children that helping our feathery friends in need is important as winter approaches.

The first-grade students enthusiastically welcomed the idea and set about making bird feeders out of discarded plastic drinking water bottles. This initiative not only contributed to the well-being of local birds but also promoted the recycling of household waste. Students, divided into three groups, decorated their birdhouses with sparkling and colorful images of birds to provide a creative touch. Before venturing into the forest, the children meticulously selected appropriate and nourishing food for the birds, ensuring that their efforts would genuinely contribute to the well-being of their avian neighbors. As the young nature enthusiasts set out on their walk, they keenly observed the seasonal changes in the environment, noting the nuances of fall and the various bird species in the vicinity of their school. When the students arrived at the forest, they carefully chose trees for use for the bird feeders and food they had prepared.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).

Meeting storks at the Berehovo Public Center “Everyone Can Help”

At the Berehovo Public Center “Everyone Can Help,” eco-activists hosted an educational session for children focused on stork conservation. With the storks soon beginning their mass migration to Africa for the winter, the session aimed to raise awareness about the challenges these birds face during their long journey. Additionally, the session highlighted the plight of storks that, due to injury or other reasons, will be unable to join the migration and will stay behind in Ukraine throughout the winter.
