First climate strike by first-graders from Yasinia

On Friday, September 15th, a group of young yet remarkably conscious Ukrainians, who are students at Yasinya Secondary School No. 1, enthusiastically joined a campaign initiated by one of the European nations to champion the future of our planet. The primary objective behind the September climate strikes, a global movement in recent years, is to spotlight critical issues such as pollution, global warming, and the associated natural disasters. Under the banner of “Fridays for the Future,” a special class was conducted right in the heart of Yasinia, situated in the Transcarpathian region.

The 1st-grade students, accompanied by their teacher, Maria Kesler, and a team of volunteers, were determined to show solidarity with their European counterparts. They embarked on an expedition to study the banks of the mountainous Chorna Tysa River, which gracefully meanders through their village. The volunteers provided valuable insights into the art of sorting household waste, imparting knowledge that empowered the young learners. Together, they paid a visit to the Yasinia Production and Housing Enterprise, where diligent employees take responsibility for maintaining the cleanliness of the village and effectively managing household waste.

Through this enlightening experience, these children tapped into the wisdom of our forebears and arrived at a profound realization: “Cleanliness is not merely where others clean, but rather where people refrain from littering!”

The event was held as part of the cooperation of the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
