Exploring the Fascinating World of Fungi on a Virtual Forest Adventure

On European Mushroom Day, the first-grade students of Yasinya Secondary School No. 1, along with their teacher Maria Kesler, embarked on a virtual journey into the forest. After all, to be well-prepared for real mushroom-picking adventures, one must first become acquainted with the various mushroom species.

Autumn, with its crisp air and earthy scents, proves to be the ideal season for delving into this subject, marking the onset of the true “quiet hunting” season. The didactic game “Learning about Flora and Fauna through Play,” a publication by the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies in collaboration with the German Nature Conservation Union, served as an invaluable tool in acquainting the students with the majority of mushrooms that thrive in the forests of the Rakhiv district. The game was rich with colorful photos, aiding the children in recognizing and recalling the names of the mushrooms they had learned or revisited.

During their math class, which served as a logical extension of the “Mushrooms of Our Forests: True and Poisonous Mushrooms” theme, the students tackled mathematical challenges. They counted mushrooms, grasped the concepts of “equal,” “greater than,” and “less than,” and also engaged in ordinal counting exercises. But that wasn’t all! The students wrapped up their immersive exploration with a creative task – “Design Your Favorite Mushroom.” This activity not only refined their fine motor skills but also nurtured their budding creativity. Such artistic endeavors have already become a cherished tradition within the class, with the results showcased proudly at mini-exhibitions held within the classroom, bringing joy to all participants in the educational journey.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
