Exploring Birds That Reside Close to Humanity

September 21 marks the International Day of Peace, and its symbol is the white-winged dove holding a green twig in its beak.

On this significant day for Ukraine, Maria Kesler, a teacher at Yasinya Secondary School No. 1, took the opportunity to introduce the first-graders to a particular bird species—the pigeon. Pigeons are birds that commonly reside near human habitation. However, the students were genuinely surprised to discover that pigeons are not only friendly birds but also symbolize peace in the secular world and represent the Holy Spirit in the realm of religion. This revelation sparked various thoughts among the children, and they were eager to share their reflections.

The students also recalled the doves’ color and drew comparisons to the hues associated with the bird of peace. Now, the young pupils hold an even greater reverence for the dove.

The event was held as part of the cooperation of the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
