In an effort to capture the attention of the younger generation and shed light on the urgent challenges posed by plastic and polyethylene pollution, experts from the Transcarpathian Regional Museum of Local Lore curated a captivating children’s workshop centered on the art of canvas bag painting. This unique event came to life on July 3rd, perfectly aligned with the global observance of World Plastic Free Day.
Guided by Ruslana Dzhahman and Mykhailo Bilanych, researchers from the museum’s Nature Branch within the Department of History and Local History, the children were not only taught the art of drawing but also instilled with the values of responsible waste management and conscious interaction with nature. Ruslana Dzhahman, a senior researcher within the Nature Branch, illuminated the young minds about the detrimental impact of plastic and polyethylene on our environment. Her enlightening talk was complemented by a captivating educational cartoon on the subject. Mykhailo Bilanych, an expert in IERS (Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies) and IRCEF (International Religious and Cultural-Educational Forum), then took the reins to illustrate the fundamental principles of environmental stewardship. He employed lapbooks titled “Towards ZERO WASTE“, created by environmental expert Ivanna Trofymenko and thoughtfully designed for instructing children and youth on waste reduction basics: the art of waste refusal, reuse, sorting, and recycling.
Following the informative segment, all participants eagerly delved into the creative process, adorning their very own eco-bags. These eco-friendly bags would serve as practical companions for trips to the store or library. As they let their imagination run wild with their unique designs, the children fondly recalled the knowledge they had gained and even shared their personal experiences in environmental activities. At the end of this enriching workshop, each participant departed not only with newfound wisdom and positive memories but also with exclusive canvas bags and individual coloring books titled “Stepan’s Adventures in Kvadratlandia“, graciously provided by IERS and IRCEF.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the organizers for creating this wonderful and informative workshop!
The event was held as part of the cooperation of the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
