We have mentioned the Parish of St. Archangel Michael of the MGCE in Uzhhorod before. Everyone is involved here, after all, from the oldest to the youngest parishioner. In recognition of their fruitful environmental work, the priest, Fr. Mykola Derbak, organized a wonderful trip for young believers and all interested parishioners to the “green pearl” of the Carpathians, the Synevyr National Nature Park, with the participation of the MGCE’s Ecological Commission.
During the trip, they visited Lake Synevyr, became acquainted with the nature of the surrounding forests and the lake itself, and learned about the lake’s origins and tales during a short tour led by Ms. Maryana Misyk from the Synevyr community. The visitors also went to the Brown Bear Rehabilitation Center to learn more about how and why it is important to protect these fascinating and useful animals – Ukraine’s largest mammals.
The young parishioners took part in an eco-educational class on “Responsibility for Creation: Preservation of the Brown Bear in the Synevyr National Park,” led by IERS employee Mykhailo Bilanych, in the green classroom built by the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies team and located on the Center’s property.
The students strengthened their knowledge of brown bears at the IERC information booth and played the game “Guess the types of living organisms.” The children compared their heights to the bears’ heights and competed for the title of greatest biodiversity expert.
For their active engagement, the children were given coloring books titled “The Carpathian Forest is Your Friend” in which they conducted exercises about bear life in the wild and in rehabilitation centers. Finally, they went to the Old Village Museum, where they were given a tour of Kolochava village’s history.
The event was held in cooperation with the Parish of St. Archangel Michael of Uzhhorod and the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) (led by Olexander Bokotey) the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
