Oksana Kremin, an expert of the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe, conducted an environmental education session for students at the Uzhhorod Greek Catholic private lyceum “TheoBand” in honor of the International Day of Forests, observed on March 21. The primary objective of the session was to raise awareness among youngsters about the significance of forest conservation, the inhabitants of forests, and the importance of preserving nature’s biodiversity. During the lesson, the children engaged in learning activities using puzzles and immersed themselves in forest-themed adventures while listening to an eco-trainer’s narrative.
Oksana Kremin highlighted, “Forests are often referred to as the ‘lungs of the planet’ because they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. They serve as the natural habitat for approximately three-quarters of all plant, animal, and fungal species on Earth” . The students actively participated in discussions following a multimedia presentation, which broadened their understanding of forests and their importance. They discovered various animal species and the beneficial properties of plants in their local forest, with a special focus on species listed in the Red Book.
The students’ knowledge was assessed through environmental tasks presented by the fictional character Forest Boy. Activities included solving a crossword puzzle on forest inhabitants, answering riddles, engaging in an environmental game about animal birth processes, and reviewing nature etiquette guidelines. To wrap up the session, each participant painted their favorite animal that lives in the forest. Overall, the event was successful and enlightening, with young nature enthusiasts actively engaging in all activities. Participants expressed a commitment to further exploring environmental conservation and biodiversity. The children recognized that preserving nature and enhancing its diversity is a crucial responsibility for every person.
The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
