Cycling tour of bird habitats

The activists from the volunteer center “Everyone Can Help” organized an engaging birdwatching cycle tour for the schoolchildren of Berehovo. The primary goal was to acquaint them with the various bird species residing in the region and to guide them through the exceptional natural landscapes of Transcarpathia. Accompanying the travelers was the knowledgeable ornithologist and IRCEF expert, Leonid Pokrytyuk, who shared fascinating facts about birds and their habitats with the children.

The chosen route for this expedition included significant local hydrological and ornithological reserves: the “Tovar” ornithological reserve (covering 49.9 hectares), the “Didivskyi Mits” hydrological reserve (spanning 15.4 hectares), and the “Stav” hydrological reserve (encompassing 18.5 hectares). These reserves were established in 2002 by the Transcarpathian Regional Council to preserve the Didivskyi Mits River valley, a unique lowland bog in Transcarpathia boasting a relatively expansive area.

Due to the shallow water levels, the group observed a modest number of waterfowl, namely the gray heron (Ardea cinerea), great egret (Egretta alba), mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), and garganey (Anas querquedula). However, a more diverse array of waterfowl was spotted at the Bumerang quarry, including sizable flocks of Eurasian coot (Fulica atra) and mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), as well as family groups of great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) and little grebe (Podiceps ruficollis), and martin (Larus), among others. In the corn and sunflower fields, the group observed birds such as the European greenfinch (Chloris chloris), European goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis), common linnet (Acanthis cannabina), and Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus). Additionally, they witnessed the migration of prey birds, including the Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) and Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo).

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
