Maria Kesler, an enthusiastic teacher at Yasinia Secondary School No. 1, set out on an unusual adventure with her first-grade children, elegantly combining artistic expression with environmental awareness. The focus of this one-of-a-kind workshop was paper recycling, which was shown through a fun activity in which the young students created adorable owl figurines.
The schoolchildren explored their prior knowledge of birds while creating adorable bird figurines out of corrugated cardboard that had been used for various packaging in this interesting workshop. Ms. Maria enriched their stories with fascinating biological details about several bird species unique to Transcarpathia, offering a better knowledge of the region’s avian biodiversity. In addition to the workshop, the students learned more via educational posters provided by the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies as part of the “Youth School of Sustainable Development of the Carpathians: Protecting the Biodiversity of Church Towers” project.
The integration of creative expression with recycling elements proved to be an effective method, as the children not only grasped the new information effortlessly but also retained it with enthusiasm. This was evident as they eagerly engaged in post-workshop discussions, sharing their newfound knowledge and proudly showcasing their crafted owl figurines in a small exhibition within the classroom.
The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
