Father Serhiy Dalekorey, the rector of the parish of Saints Peter and Paul in Verkhovyna Bystra, recently conducted a lesson on “Ecoculture” with students from the gymnasium branch of the Volosianka Secondary School. During the lesson, Father Serhiy highlighted the significance of environmental preservation and the importance of having a responsible attitude toward nature. The students were educated on the fundamental principles of eco-culture, including the prudent use of resources, waste reduction, and the protection of biodiversity.
Father Serhiy used eco-educational materials developed through a collaboration between the Ecological Commission of the Mukachevo Greek Catholic Eparchy, the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies, and the German Nature Conservation Union – NABU. These materials provided the children with accessible information on various aspects of environmental conservation and allowed them to reinforce their understanding through practical tasks.
The students responded enthusiastically to the lesson, actively engaging in discussions and posing insightful questions. Father Serhiy stressed that ecoculture is an essential component of the Christian faith, emphasizing the importance of showing love and respect for all of God’s creations. Such initiatives play a crucial role in instilling environmental awareness in the younger generation and fostering the development of responsible and conscientious citizens. Overall, the eco-culture class served as a valuable opportunity for students to contemplate their actions and contributions toward the preservation of our planet. It was a fulfilling experience that made me think deeply and strengthened children’s dedication to protecting the environment.
The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
