Volunteers from the “Everyone Can Help” public center recently organized an enriching visit to the historic Roman Catholic Church in Berehovo for children and their parents. The Berehovo Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, an ancient structure in Transcarpathia, shines as a treasure of Ukraine’s history and a significant architectural landmark. The primary aim of the visit was to educate the locals about the biodiversity of the church towers and to install a bat box in the church’s attic. Leonid Pokrytyuk, an IRCEF expert, led the tour, providing fascinating insights into the various animals that inhabit churches and the reasons they choose these structures as their homes.
Mr. Pokrytyuk, an eco-activist dedicated to preserving bats—frequent residents of church towers—regularly organizes educational classes on this topic. During the tour, he elucidated the importance of bats in the ecosystem and illustrated how to build bat boxes, specialized shelters meant to lure and accommodate bats. The highlight of the visit was the installation of a bat box in the church attic, a practical step towards increasing the bat population in the area. Participants eagerly assisted in setting up the bat box, contributing to the preservation efforts and enhancing their understanding of local wildlife.
The event was held in the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
