Bird watching on Pravoslavna embankment in Uzhhorod

On September 8th, the fourth-graders from Multidisciplinary Lyceum “Intellect” No. 11 in Uzhhorod had the opportunity to delve into the world of birdwatching along the picturesque Pravoslavna embankment. This engaging environmental education event was organized by the Interreligious Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) in collaboration with the Transcarpathian Regional Museum of Local Lore, all in celebration of Uzhhorod Day and International Crane Day.

Guiding the young enthusiasts were Mykhailo Bilanych and Ruslana Dzhahman, both researchers from the museum’s Nature Branch within the Department of History and Local Lore, and experts from IRCEF. Their mission was to captivate the children’s attention, shedding light on the diverse spectrum of biodiversity and the significance of its preservation. Autumn marks a critical period when birds require special human care and attention, as they face increased risks of cold and hunger.

Descending the riverbank of the Uzh River, the students, accompanied by their teacher, V. Symkovych, were treated to an informative lecture by Ruslana Dzhahman. She delved into the various bird species inhabiting Uzhhorod, teaching the students the art of bird observation, how to identify their distinctive characteristics and behaviors, and how to lend them assistance throughout the different seasons. Ms. Ruslana also shared the exciting tidbit that September heralds the arrival of many migratory birds over Uzhhorod, including cranes, which celebrate their special day every second Sunday of the month.

Mykhailo Bilanych equipped the children with binoculars generously provided by the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies, imparting the skills required to make the most of this optical aid in spotting as many birds as possible. Along the riverbank, the students marveled at mute swans carrying out their morning routines. They also caught sight of mallard ducks and learned how to differentiate between the genders, all thanks to the binoculars. The children left the session spellbound by the wondrous world of birds they had encountered during their adventure and pledged to become more attuned to the needs of these feathered friends during the colder seasons, offering them assistance and continuing their observations.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Martin Celuch, a dear and steadfast partner, friend, and a member of the Ecological Commission of the Roman Catholic Church in Slovakia, for generously procuring the binoculars that enabled the children to explore the birds and the rich biodiversity of the region.

The event was organized by the Interreligious Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) (headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
