Recently, the Berehovo Public Center “Everyone Can Help” hosted an enlightening environmental event dedicated to the Day of the Great Tit. This gathering provided an excellent opportunity for children to delve into the captivating world of birds. Leonid Pokrytyuk, an ornithologist from the Interreligious and Civil Forum of Eastern Europe and a volunteer at the public center, guided the participants through the fascinating aspects of bird life.
Throughout the event, Leonid captivated the participants with insights into the most intriguing aspects of bird life. A focal point of the session was the hands-on task of crafting feeders for great tits. Leonid imparted valuable knowledge on selecting the ideal locations for feeders, maintaining their cleanliness, and identifying the most beneficial foods for our feathered friends. The ornithologist also shed light on the diversity of great tit species, introduced other winter-resident bird species in Ukraine, and discussed ways to assist them during the colder months. In addition to the ornithological aspects, psychologist Natalia Maslakova facilitated a creative part, demonstrating how to combine imaginative ideas using readily available tools and vibrant felt paper. She helped the youngsters in creating colorful postcards shaped like great tits, which served as treasured keepsakes of the event that the attendees took home.
In her concluding remarks, Natalia emphasized the significance of such eco-educational sessions for children, highlighting their role in raising awareness about the crucial role of birds in nature. By combining ornithological insights with hands-on creativity, the event not only provided valuable knowledge but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the feathered inhabitants of our natural surroundings.
The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
