A workshop on making a bat box in Uzhhorod’s “ROMA Hub”

Andriy Donichenko, an activist of the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum for Eastern Europe (IRCEF), organized a workshop focused on constructing bat boxes for children from the Roma minority at the “Roma Hub“, established by the NGO “Nehemiah Ukraine” in Uzhhorod. During this event, the eco-trainer educated the participants on the importance of protecting bats and preserving their habitats, underscoring the fact that all bat species are included in the Red Book of Ukraine.

Before engaging in hands-on activities, the eco-activist provided an overview of the different types of bat boxes, their functions, and the ideal locations for their installation to attract bats. The children were introduced to various bat species and were informed about their positive impact on humans and ways to support their conservation in nature.

The attendees listened carefully to Andriy Donichenko’s instructions while enthusiastically helping to build a real bat shelter, understanding the purpose of each wooden piece. The children worked diligently and enthusiastically to assemble a functional bat box. They then worked with adults to put up the bat box in the attic of the hub, with the goal of making a cozy home for bats.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
