A literary and ecological meeting with Natalia Humen-Bilanych at the Uzhhorod Primary School “Veselka”

Last week, the primary school “Veselka” in Uzhhorod welcomed a literary gathering featuring Natalia Humen-Bilanych, a writer, catechist, and eco-activist of the IERS and the Ecological Commission of the MGCE. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce the 2nd-grade students to Natalia’s work and raise awareness about the important issues she addresses in her books.

The meeting started with anticipation as students eagerly awaited the guest’s arrival, having prepared poems and researched the writer in advance. Natalia Humen-Bilanych started the conversation by introducing herself and her work, captivating the students with recitations from the poetry collection “Melody of Flowering“. She offered glimpses into her creative process, revealing the inspiration behind her works and the significance of literature and reading in nurturing young minds, fostering imagination, and enhancing cognitive development. A significant part of the gathering revolved around environmental issues, a recurring theme in Natalia Humen-Bilanych’s children’s books.

The writer promoted environmental awareness by encouraging students to solve rhyming riddles about animals from her collection “Guess and Color”. Mrs. Natalia presented her books on biodiversity conservation, including “Under the Owl’s Wing”, “Little Mouse”, and “Bats”, emphasizing the significance of varied ecosystems, addressing environmental degradation, and other critical environmental issues. The story about bats captivated the 2nd-graders, especially those who had seen the play “The Adventures of Kozhyk and Letyk” at the Transcarpathian Academic Regional Puppet Theater “Bavka”, which was based on Natalia Humen-Bilanych’s eco-tale “The Bats”.

Throughout the session, the children actively engaged with the writer, posing questions that fostered lively interaction and deepened their understanding of the topics discussed. Natalia Humen-Bilanych ended the session by giving students workbooks titled “Secrets of Church Towers”, along with themed stickers, badges, and pens from the project “Youth School for Sustainable Development of the Carpathians: Protection of the Biodiversity of Church Towers” implemented by the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies, to further inspire a passion for studying and conserving biodiversity. Additionally, the 2nd-grade teacher received a special gift: a lapbook titled “Towards ZERO WASTE” to help teach students about responsible waste management.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
