In a unique and captivating session, the 3rd-grade students at Verkhniy Studeny gymnasium in the Pylypets village council delved into the world of owls and bats to explore the importance of preserving biodiversity in church towers. The children, led by Teacher Liudmyla Zayats, were taken to the fascinating world of these nocturnal creatures. Through an educational video, they learned about the reasons why owls and bats choose church attics as their habitats and delved into the differences in body structures between bats and birds.
The lesson was designed to be interactive and engaging, with students participating in intellectual tasks, coloring bat pictures from the “Secrets of Church Towers” workbook, and participating in a bat hunt within the classroom. The children performed a short play focused on bats and made toy bats from cork and paper to remember the lesson in order to conclude their learning journey. This imaginative and educational session not only deepened the students’ understanding of biodiversity but also allowed them to showcase their creative talents and provided them with a memorable and enriching experience.
The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
