Guests from Kyiv came to the Berehovo volunteer center “Everyone Can Help” to meet Leonid Pokrytyuk, an extraordinary Transcarpathian ornithologist and expert at the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies (IERS), in order to listen to his exclusive bird talks.
They viewed Leonid’s birds, learned about Transcarpathia’s rich birdlife, and took a tour of Count Gabor Betlen’s courtyard’s whole facilities while they were there. Guests took part in a bird knowledge quiz throughout the lecture and earned distinctive rewards for perfect answers: badges, stickers, brochures, or posters.

Leonid Pokrytyuk explained that all visitors to the Count’s yard who come to our eco-educational sessions receive basic knowledge about bird life (adaptations to flight, nutritional preferences, voice communication, ecological features), how to distinguish between prey birds, how to behave in the case of finding “lost nestlings,” and what to do when birds truly need help (injured birds or “foundlings” stolen from their parents).
The ornithologist also stated that the warm weather makes it possible for eco-educational sessions to be held in the ancient vault of the Betlen residence, making the events of the last few days even more intriguing and appealing to children. The extensive educational material: multiple thematic tables with copies of Ukrainian nesting owls, studies of various species of owls, models, and, of course, the presence of real birds left a big impression on the guests. The eco-educational class was followed by a walk around the count’s yard and a brief introduction to historical life and architecture.

The event was held as part of the cooperation of the Interreligious and Environmental Civil Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) (headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the “Everyone Can Help” Volunteer Center with the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
