Students of the Berehovo Lyceum named after Taras Shevchenko had the opportunity to expand their knowledge on the biodiversity of pollinating insects during a visit to the volunteer center “Everyone Can Help.” Led by expert Leonid Pokrytyuk of the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe, the children participated in a thematic eco-educational activity outdoors. They gathered under a tent to listen to an engaging presentation on the various types of insects that are crucial in pollinating plants in the region. They also learned how to construct special homes to attract these insects.
During the activity, Mr. Leonid highlighted the differences between domestic honey bees and wild bee species, emphasizing that wild bees are often more efficient pollinators due to their biology and behavior. He explained that while honey bees primarily collect nectar, many wild bees prioritize collecting pollen. Additionally, wild bees are more resilient and adaptable, able to work in a wider range of environmental conditions compared to honey bees.
The expert also discussed the challenges that insects face due to human activity, pointing out the loss of natural habitats for wild bees. The children were taught how to create “insect hotels” to provide safe havens for beneficial insects in order to address the issue. He demonstrated the structure of these hotels and guided the students on how they could make their own at home. Highlighting the importance of insect diversity for the pollination of various plant species, Leonid stressed the significance of protecting these valuable organisms to ensure the survival of many plants. Through this educational experience, the students gained a deeper understanding of the vital role that pollinating insects play in maintaining ecosystems and supporting plant life.
The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
