Recently, primary school students of Berehove’s “Opre Roma” gymnasium, accompanied by their teacher Svitlana Cheryban, visited the “Everyone Can Help” public center. The purpose of their visit was to learn about beneficial entomophagous insects, with Leonid Pokrytyuk, an eco-activist and IRCEF expert, providing detailed explanations. The insects discussed during the lesson included ladybugs (Coccinella), ground beetles (Carabidae hortensis L.), Pearly Green Lacewing (Chrysoper lacarnea Sch.), tachinid flies (Tachinidae), ichneumon wasps (Ichneumonidae), and parasitic wasps (Parasitica, Hymenoptera).
The event happened in the yard and the green classroom at the center. The classroom was set up last year with help from the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies. In the classroom, students learned about insects, watched videos, and learned to make hotels for Mason bees. In the yard, they did activities like looking for ladybug larvae. Leonid Pokrytyuk emphasized the benefits of different types of insects and discussed the reasons for their decline in nature. He explained how human activities can positively or negatively affect the populations of these insects and urged the students to take responsibility for the environment.
The event was held with the participation of children of the Roma national minority in the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
