Biodiversity conservation becomes approachable through an eco-educational lesson for children in Synevyr

On February 20, IRCEF expert Lyubov Grechyn carried out an enlightening environmental and educational session focused on preserving biodiversity in the Ukrainian Carpathians for the children of the Synevyr community. The lesson unfolded as a captivating theatrical game staged at a local school. The eco-trainer ingeniously used a set of puppets from the eco-theater “Explore the World with Us!”—a”collaborative effort between the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies and the Transcarpathian Academic Regional Puppet Theater—to illustrate the essence of biodiversity and shed light on the critical issue of its decline. Through the use of the puppets, Mrs. Grechyn illustrated various types of living organisms and their significance in maintaining ecosystems, capturing the children’s attention and sparking their interest.

The young participants eagerly embraced the opportunity to step into the shoes of the animal characters portrayed by the puppets, immersing themselves in the behaviors and traits of wildlife. This interactive role-playing activity empowered each child to share personal stories and insights about the indigenous fauna they had encountered in their homeland, fostering a deeper connection to and appreciation for the natural world around them.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
