Pre-New Year bird-watching

In the final days of the school year, seventh-grade students from Turya-Remetivskyi Secondary School, accompanied by their biology teacher Orysia Krechko, had a bird-watching activity to kick off the holiday season. The students filled bird feeders with goodies from home to ensure the feathered residents had sustenance during the holidays. Sparrows and great tits promptly flocked to enjoy the offerings. The students organized a friendly bird-spotting competition to capture photos and identify different species, adding a spirited element to the activity.

Throughout the day, the students observed approximately 35 birds. The outing also provided an opportunity for them to discern deciduous and evergreen trees in winter. The staghorn sumac, with its dense crown of branches, was especially fascinating to the students, making it difficult to spot the birds nestled within. The students noted the plentiful viburnum bushes, recognizing that they would provide food for the birds until spring—a positive observation.

Although the bird photos weren’t perfect, the feathered friends’ photo hunt was considered a success, thanks to the favorable weather. As the holidays approach, the well-fed birds in the area are bringing joy to both the birds and the students.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
