Members of the “Everyone Can Help” volunteer center hosted an engaging workshop for local schoolchildren, where they introduced the kids to the unique aspects of the scops owl’s life.
Renowned ornithologist and IERS expert, Leonid Pokrytyuk, took the opportunity to enlighten the students about why this owl is named the scops owl and elucidated its annual migration to Africa in the fall. He also delved into where these charming creatures can be found in Ukraine and how human activities can either harm or aid them. The children eagerly fired away with questions about owls in general, asking about their daytime activity, the distinctions between male and female owls, their dietary preferences, and more.
Throughout the ornithologist’s informative session, the students, guided by psychologist Natalia Maslakova, crafted bird-shaped pendants. Natalia expertly taught the children how to choose suitable materials for their pendants, combine colors effectively, and handle the equipment safely.
The event was held as part of the cooperation of the Interreligious and Civil Environmental Forum of Eastern Europe (IRCEF) headed by Olexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), and Nataliya Kulya (IRCEF).
